About Me

Ever since I can remember I've had the desire to create.
When I was around 6 or 7, I made a hollowed out egg from clay and sculpted tiny rabbits and a picket fence and painted it for my mom. It has always been the homemade items that I treasure the most. The crochet blankets my grandmother made or the stained glass parrot my grandfather made. I feel a special connection to them.

Everything you see on my website is handmade by me. Uniquehandbags started in 2005 when I received a sewing machine for my birthday and started experimenting with scrap leather and upholstery. I started making gifts for friends and family and soon realized how much I enjoyed it, so I decided to really give it a try and start my own business. Leather is one of my new favorite materials to work with. I like the fact that the edges can be left raw and wont fray, therefore allowing more flexibilty in my designs.

It's been extremely helpful to have a graphic design background. It allows me to do all my own photography, marketing and web design without having to hire outside help and I am constantly learning new skills. It really comes in handy to have those skills.

My life is consumed with creativity. I enjoy watercolor, illustration, sewing, sculpting, crocheting, making jewelry, photography and gardening. I never limit myself to just one kind of art or media. There is just too much to explore and learn! I want to do it all!

I attended school at Platt College in San Diego where I studied graphic design and computer graphics. After graduating I worked as the lead production/design person for 4 years at a very busy sign company. In the last 20 years a lot has happened. I had children. I have had numerous jobs, but have never been thouroughly happy with what I was doing. Every job that I ever had always reminded me that I should be doing something creative and have my own business, I just never knew what it was. I've worked in retail, sales, restaurants, the school district working in pre-k and developmental kindergarten, physical therapist aid, fitness trainer, model, web designer, and a few others. Nothing seemed to be the right job for me. I can finally say that I am doing what I love.

My dream is to own my own shop/studio someday where I can work and sell at the same time, and share space with other artists. I love the whole set up of Spanish Village in Balboa Park, San Diego. The whole concept of it is great! There are so many fun people to talk to and so much art influence and I admire that each artist is doing what they love and sharing it with the world. It is also the place where I grew up, and I miss very much.

I enjoy the arts so much that I decided to start "Artist Interviews" on my website focusing on the arts that I enjoy the most and giving other artists some exposure. I also want to let each one of them know how much I appreciate what they do.

Pamela
